Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 9.36.21 PM

Do you love the show Super Why!? I know my kids do. I love that the kids are having fun and learning at the same time. I think there’s a great balance between the two. Well, whether you and your kids are big fans or no, I have to say that this is a pretty cool costume, all made from scratch, with no sewing involved. I know, it’s hard to believe, but check out the video below. It’s really pretty easy, and I think you and your kids will have a lot of fun like I did with mine! So go ahead, and try to make a no-sew Super Why costume and transform into your favorite PBS KIDS superhero for Halloween. Even if your kids end up hounding you at the local costume pop-up shop and you cave, it’s still a lot of fun and a great way to spend some creative time with your little ones. Enjoy!

Now for the details!

Celebrating National Zoo and Aquarium Month in June is a great opportunity to gather the family and take “a trip” to explore your local zoo and aquarium, as well as to visit the websites of America’s great zoos and aquariums. Many of the sites offer excellent educational resources, including photographs, videos, facts, lesson plans and activities.  TheAssociation of Zoos and Aquariums provides a collection of links to their accredited zoos and aquariums.

The Jim Henson Company has also recently created The Dinosaur Train Discovery Tour, which provides some great resources for you that any young DINOSAUR TRAIN fan is going to love!

What is the Dinosaur Train Discovery Tour?  It’s is a mobile website that may be viewed on a desktop or laptop computer, or on a smartphone web browser, and relates dinosaur and natural history content from the DINOSAUR TRAIN animated television series (which airs on PBS KIDS), to zoo and aquarium animals.

At aquariums and zoos, The Dinosaur Train Discovery Tour will teach kids fun facts about today’s living creatures, and encourage them to learn more about the relationship between modern day ocean life and animals such as sharks, crabs, turtles, elephants, bats, birds, crocodiles and more, and their prehistoric ancestors.    You can see the site at the following link: http://pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain/tour

You can access the mobile website either before, during or after visits to zoos and aquariums to enhance your child’s engagement in paleontology, animal science and natural history.  Guides can also be downloaded for families to take with them on their visits too:

  • Click here to download the Dinosaur Train Discovery Tour for the Zoo
  • Click here to download the Dinosaur Train Discovery Tour for the Aquarium
  • Click here to download the Dinosaur Train Discovery Tour for the Natural History Museum

The kids might just find that with the help of the Dinosaur Train Discovery Tour, visiting Zoo’s, Aquarium’s and Natural History Museum’s are among their “favorite trips” ever!

Everyone enjoys taking fun trips, including DINOSAUR TRAIN’S Buddy!  Buddy fans everywhere are sure to enjoy the new sticker stories from Penguin Young Readers Group, Buddy’s Favorite Trips.   With over 75 stickers, this sticker stories book takes fans on a ride on the Dinosaur Train and features… that’s right… Buddy’s favorite trips! ENTER TO WIN: “Ride Along the Dinosaur Train” Book

Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 1.40.52 PM

Did you know that Aristotle (384-322 BC) is often referred to as the father of marine biology? Aristotle is the first to record observations on marine life, and identified a variety of species including crustaceans, echinoderms, mollusks, and fish. However, until submarines were invented, it was almost impossible to explore the deep ocean. Today, submarines are used by marine biologists to collect samples, take videos and observe sea life in ways that humans would not be able to do! Marine biologists are able to work at depths of several hundred meters for hours in these special submarines!

Ride-Along-the-Dinosaur-Train-book

There is so much to discover under water. Just recently in December 2012, a giant, marine reptile that roamed the seas around 150 million years ago was identified as a new species. The animal, now named Pliosaurus funkei spanned about 40 feet, had a massive 6.5 foot long skull and a bite as powerful as a Tyrannosaurus rex.

We wonder what Buddy would think of that?!

Buddy and everyone’s favorite Pteranodon family recently dove into an underwater adventure in “Submarine Adventure.” The one-hour program will feature four new stories about sea creatures that lived during the “Age of Dinosaurs.” Preschoolers will meet new friends along the way – from Otto Ophthalmosaurus to Archelon turtles – as they learn about natural science, natural history and paleontology. And if you missed it, both full episodes and clips from “Submarine Adventure” are available on the PBS KIDS Video Player at PBSKIDS.org/video and on the free PBS KIDS Video App!

JetBlue And PBS Kids Team Up For ‘Soar With Reading’ Program

JetBlue airlines and PBS Kids have partnered up for a fun summer reading program for kids – “Soar with Reading“.

The program’s aim is to keep children engaged with reading wherever they go this summer (whether on a flight or right at home)!  They plan to use a combination of in-flight and online resources, community reading events and also a partnership with First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides new books to children in need.

Parents can download a free reading activity kit, create a summer reading list, and keep track of their child’s minutes.

For every reader who registers on the Soar With Reading site, JetBlue will donate a book to a child through First Book – up to 10,000 books!

Child passengers on JetBlue flights this summer will have a chance to receive reading kits, as well!
JetBlue is also sending crewmembers across the country to volunteer at kid-friendly events at local libraries.  They will read books to children, share stories about their job and their exciting travel adventures.

Additionally, the campaign will support public libraries. At SoarwithReading.com families can vote for their favorite library in the Soar with Reading Sweepstakes. The winning library will receive $10,000 worth of children’s books courtesy of JetBlue and Random House Children’s Books. And if you enter the winning library, you will have a chance to win a family vacation to Atlantis (Paradise Island, Bahamas)!  That sounds like a great way to spend some family time this summer!
