Kate Winslet Opens Up About Necker Island Fire

Just a week ago, Kate Winslet escaped a horrible fire on Richard Branson’s island of Necker Island. Luckily, every one of the 20 guests were safe and sound after the fire went out. Now, Kate is opening up about the whole ordeal.

“I will never forget Richard placing his arms around both my children as we were watching the flames, and saying, ‘At the end of the day, what you realize is that all that matters is the people that you love. Everything else is just stuff. And none of that stuff matters,'” Winslet told Entertainment Tonight.

“I’m just glad that everyone is safe,” Winslet said. “And this easily could not have been the case.”

Celebrity Mom Kate Winslet & Her Family Escape Deadly Fire

A fire blazed at Sir Richard Branson’s idyllic Caribbean home in Necker Island of the British Virgin Islands on Monday (August 22) – the same home that Vanessa Minnillo and Nick Lachey held their wedding last month.

The fire was reportedly sparked by a lightning strike caused by Hurricane Irene as it blazed a trail of destruction through the Caribbean late Sunday (August 21) into early Monday (August 22). About 20 guests were staying at the tycoon’s eight bedroom Great House. Sir Richard Branson and his family, including his 90-year-old mother, Eve, were forced to flee as well as guest and Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet along with her family as well.

Richard said, “We had a really bad tropical storm with winds up to 90mph. A big lightning storm came around 4am and hit the house. My son Sam rushed to the house and helped get everyone out. Kate Winslet, her boyfriend, and her family were there as well as Holly and some of her friends. Many thanks to Kate for helping to carry my 90-year-old mom out of the main house to safety. I’m sure she was wondering when a director was going to shout ‘CUT!'”
