First Lady Michelle Obama Talks Fitness With Her Daughters And More With Rachael Ray

First Lady Michelle Obama stopped to chat with Rachael Ray (episode airing on Wednesday, March 5th) about everything from healthy eating to her favorite workout music and more.  She also dished on how her daughters get in plenty of physical fitness, too.

On what foods made her say “ew” as a kid:  “Oh, yeah….Brussel sprouts. Uh, liver…  Liver was a dark day in our household. It was dark…We were angry.”

On her favorite workout tunes:   “Oh, I love Pharrell’s “Happy.  It’s just such a happy song. I mean, it literally makes you happy.”

On whether her daughters workout with her:  “You know, actually they don’t.  You know, we’re blessed to have our kids in a school system where they play sports and they have PE, and then they have activities outside of school so they, you know, are pretty much done….But we do things on vacations….We hike. All the kids are old enough now where going on hikes is a really fun family thing.  You get to talk on those long hikes and in ways that you’re not distracted. You’re out in nature, you get to hear what’s going on in your kids’ lives, so the older they get, the more we can do that together.”

Adopt A New Dog!

It looks like the Obamas have a new family member!  Today, The White House welcomed Sunny, the newest dog of the First Family of the United States. Here’s a snippet from their press release::

Sunny was born in Michigan in June 2012, and arrived at the White House today. Just like Bo, she’s a Portuguese Water Dog, which works great for the Obamas because of allergies in their family.

Sunny is the perfect little sister for Bo – full of energy and very affectionate – and the First Family picked her name because it fit her cheerful personality.

Adorable. I’m sure President Obama’s daughters are thrilled!

Says She Sometimes Feels Like A Single Mom

Her husband might be one of the most powerful men in the world, but according to Michelle Obama, she sometimes feels like a single mom, but that’s just because President Obama has so much going on (like running the country!). The First Lady of the United States opens up to Parade Magazine about raising her daughters, sending them off to college and that single mom status. Here are some snippets:

On thinking about where Malia will go to college.
You know, I am really trying to tone that way down. Because kids are under unreasonable pressure, and it can destroy a high school experience.

On the rules she has set for the Obama daughters as they grow older.
I give them as long a leash as they can handle. What I tell my kids is, I’m preparing you for college and for life. So, having independence, knowing how to set your own boundaries, figuring out how to make that balance. We still have screen time rules.

On whether her recent description of herself as “a single mother” was an acknowledgement of the pressure that comes with always making the decisions about her kids.
That’s absolutely right. When you have a husband or a partner who’s eithertraveling for work or has huge responsibility … and I give my husband credit—he knows who their friends are, he knows what their schedule is. But he’s not making the calls to the dance studio to figure out what classes they’re taking next year … I think it’s important for both parents to shoulder that [responsibility]. I tell my kids, “I am thinking about you every other minute of my day.”

Michelle Obama Explains How She Keeps Her Family Healthy And Happy

There is no doubt that Michelle Obama does a great job of taking care of her family and making sure that they are both happy and healthy. The First Lady recently opened up to Parenting Magazine where she talks about how she tries to set good examples for her daughters through sports and what she does to ensure that they lead a physically fit lifestyle. Here’s a snippet of what she says:

“We set the expectation that sports are as important as homework and friends. It’s important to learn how to compete, to develop a skill,” she said. “I want them to learn how to sweat, how to win gracefully and lose with dignity. I want them to learn what it feels like to get better at something that you didn’t think you were good at.”

Sasha Obama Has Her 11th Birthday Party At Red Robin

Sasha Obama celebrated a very special 11th birthday with her closest friends and family at a Red Robin restaurant near the White House in Washington, D.C., according to sources.

Us Weekly reports that Sasha had a good time with her school friends at the low-key birthday bash that included chicken burgers, cheeseburgers with avocado and milkshakes. A source tells the mag:

“Before leaving the restaurant, the First Lady left a generous tip for the server and tapped management on the shoulder to let them know ‘everything was wonderful and the girls had a great time.’”
