Jada Pinkett Smith Talks Sacrifice In August’s REDBOOK

Celebrity mom Jada Pinkett Smith chats with the August issue of REDBOOK about the ups and downs of raising famous kids in Hollywood and the things that she gave up in the name of motherhood.

On putting her family ahead of her music dreams:

“I had to make choices. Believe me, I would still be on the road with my band, Wicked Wisdom, and making as many movies as I can a year, and doing all sorts of other things if I didn’t have the responsibility of a family. But I have children with their own talents and dreams, and I know I have to be standing next to them for that journey.”

“It was excruciating, completely excruciating. When Jaden was auditioning for The Pursuit of Happyness, my band had just gotten an offer to open for Guns N’ Roses in Europe. For me, that was unbelievable. But the choice was: I could be a rock star, or I could be on the set with my son to make sure he was healthy and happy. We all know how that story ended!”

On raising Willow and Jaden in Hollywood:

“Let me tell you what I fear most: Them growing up like I did, in a house with drugs in a war zone, where if I walked out my door I could be shot. Hollywood ain’t nothing compared to that! Growing up in the streets of Baltimore, or the streets of Philly where Will grew up — I’d rather have my kids here. It still makes me nervous that they’re part of something that isn’t totally real, but it’s up to Will and me to teach them what’s real and what’s not.”

Will Smith Wants More Kids, Jada Pinkett Smith Says No

Celeb couple Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are disagreeing about expanding their family.  Will would like another child crawling around the house, where Jada is counting the days to freedom (when the kids leave the nest).

“He’s like, ‘Come on, lets have just one more,’” says the actress. “But I’m like ‘No Way!’ I have my bonus son (Will’s son Willard from a previous relationship) about to graduate and my other two almost ready to go out the door. I’m not about to go back to the diapers now. No way.”

Surprising enough, I know more couples where the husband wants more kids, not the wife – which I find interesting.  I guess because it usually seems to be the woman who wants start the family in the first place.

Jada Pinkett Smith Defends Kids’ Showbiz Careers

Jada Pinkett Smith has defended her decision to let her two children start their show business careers at such a young age, insisting they don’t shoulder the same burdens as other pre-teen stars because they have no financial pressures.

Jada and her husband Will Smith’s son Jaden, 12, already has a movie career, starring in last year’s (10) remake of The Karate Kid, while his 10-year-old sister, Willow, has launched herself as a singer and is currently on tour with Justin Bieber.

The Smiths have come under scrutiny for letting their young children enter the spotlight, with author Terry McMillan even accusing them of “exploiting” and “pimping” out their kids.  But Pinkett Smith has brushed off the criticism and she is adamant her son and daughter remain “grounded.”
She tells Britain’s Daily Mail,

“This isn’t about fame or money. They were still going to have their trials because of who their parents are. As much as I wish I could figure out a way I could protect my children, they have their destiny. I’m not going to put brakes on that out of fear.

“Our children are allowed to stay in the paradigm of being a child. They don’t have to take care of their families: become the complete emotional, physical and financial focus that happens to many child stars. Our family structure is a little different and it’s quite hard to comprehend because it’s so outside what usually happens in a family, but the paradigm is the same. You have Mother. You have Father. Father is protective. Mother is the teacher.

“Most of the time with child stars, the child has all the responsibilities and the mother and father don’t understand what’s actually happening to them, so the child can trust no one… But with us the paradigm stays the same because the child can still be the child with an extraordinary gift. It is something to manage. I will not overlook that. I have a 10 year old who can stand up in front of an audience of 17,000 and rock the house. I have to keep her grounded.”

Celebrity Anniversary: Will Smith And Jada Pinkett Smith

Celebrity parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are celebrating 13 years of wedded bliss today!

Will and Jada tied the knot on New Year’s Eve at the Cloisters, a medieval-style mansion near Jada’s hometown of Baltimore.  They had a fairly small ceremony with just 100 guests present.

In an interview years ago Will gushed about his wife:

You’re so much stronger when your partner is strong. I honestly believe there is no woman for me but Jada. Of all the women I’ve met – and there’ve been a few – no one can handle me the way Jada does. Once you feel someone locked in on you, it’s no contest. As fine as other women can be, as tempting sexually, I’m not going anywhere. This is it. I can’t imagine what anyone else could offer.

I really believe that a man and a woman together, raising a family, is the purest form of happiness we can experience.
