ELIZABETH BANKS
Managing Career And Kids Is No Easy Task

Elizabeth Banks cover

Elizabeth Banks opened up in the issue of Marie Claire @Work to talk about her career and her family, which now includes two sons!  The “Pitch Perfect” star dishes on it all – from producing to landing her first acting gig.

On women-focused movies: “I try not to say, ‘Yeah, Bridesmaids opened the door to make more movies about women.’ I mean, did it? I don’t know, where are they?”

On producing movies: “It’s all about managing people. You know, women in Hollywood, we don’t get action franchises and superheroes. The rom-coms that made Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Reese Witherspoon stars are out of favor right now—nobody is making them. In this business, if you are an ambitious person, you don’t wait for people to hand you opportunities. You have to make a way for yourself.”

On how she manages it all: “First of all, I have a home office. I have two kids, and it means I get to put them down for their naps and be the person they wake up to. When I’m actressing, which is my day job, and which I’m doing right now, I leave the house at 4:30 in the morning five days a week and I get home at 6, and hope to get two hours with them before they go to bed. So I’m slightly miserable about that.”

On working with her husband, Max Handelman at their production company, Brownstone Productions: “We realized very quickly that if we were going to have a life together, he could not go back to 9 to 5 with two weeks of vacation.”

On her early career: “I was offered a two-year contract on a soap opera right after I graduated. It would have paid off all of my student loans, and it was in New York where I wanted to live. I didn’t even have an agent at the time, but I signed with a guy who said to me, ‘You got a soap opera on your first day, let’s see what else you can get.’”

Elizabeth Banks: Women Shouldn’t Be Expected To Bounce Back After Baby

With so many women in Hollywood losing their baby weight in record time these days, it’s so refreshing to hear from an actress who says that women shouldn’t feel pressured to bounce back so quickly after being pregnant. Celebrity mom Elizabeth Banks, who used a surrogate for both of her two children, says:

“I like to believe that if I had carried my own baby, I would have bounced back. But who knows? And by the way, it’s such a horrible — women should not be expected to bounce back … it’s a, I think, a true disservice what’s going on right now with all these celebrity moms … first of all, I just want to remind people that celebrities generally are genetically superior human beings on a certain level anyway … they’re mostly thin, you know, they got trainers, they work out, they’ve got money, they’ve got the ability, you know, and they are normally genetically predisposed to being thin people anyway, so like these women who are holding up, you know, certain people as their benchmark after they’ve had a child, like just go be with your kid for a minute … don’t get to the gym right away. It’s alright. This is not how it’s supposed to be, everybody. Calm down.”

Elizabeth Banks: One Child Is A Piece Of Cake Until You Have Two

I think that any mother who has welcomed a second child in the world knows exactly what Elizabeth Banks is taking about here. The celebrity mom, who just welcomed a second baby boy, Magnus, last year, says that while having one child might seem like a piece of cake, having two is no walk in the park. She explains:

“Two is very different from one. When you have one kid, you feel like you can jet set around and you can throw him on the hip and you get your life done. You don’t realize how easy one is until you have two. Now I’m really a mom. Oh, I am a mom now! This is for serious — I am responsible for two people now.”
