Singer Brandy Dishes On New Show And Raising Her Daughter With Honesty

Singer Brandy is a mentor on the new singing competition program ‘Majors and Minors‘ for The Hub, which features contestants from the ages of 10-16.  She shared that it was easy for her to relate to the kids because of her own daughter, Sy’rai, 9.

“Going in there with the intention of being honest and loving, and coming from a place of love, that’s what they took with them and that’s what they connected to. That’s how I raise my daughter. I’m open and honest with her, and that’s all I was with these kids.”

The series follows 12 kids as they try to score a record deal.  Brandy says the kids have inspired her:

“The show reminded me of how I started in this industry, of everything that I had gone through as a kid.  These kids know who they are and really want to be an inspiration. Of course they want to be famous and want people to know them, but they also want to be influential and inspiring and write songs that matter.

To work with people like that, it causes you to go, ‘Oh my God, I need to rethink my priorities, I need to rethink my dreams’.  I need to be just as fearless or get a little more confidence in my life.”

Brandy’s Daughter Sy’rai Has the Entertainment Gene

It looks like Brandy won’t be the only star of the family! While talking to Parade magazine, Brandy admits that her 9-year-old daughter, Sy’rai, has the entertainment gene.

On Sy’rai following in her footsteps: “She loves to sing and dance. I’m trying to keep her life as normal as possible, but I’m definitely encouraging her to do what she loves to do. She’s a little bit shy to sing in front of me now, but I’ve caught her singing and she sounds great. I know she has the entertainment bug. I’m just trying to have her hold out for a little bit until she gets older.”

On the role music played during her childhood: “Music has always been my life. I was born to sing. I was born to express myself in music. My dad was very involved in music, he’s a musician, so we were always listning to music and singing. I don’t know what my life would be without music. It’s like my first language.”

On the ups and downs of celebrity: “Fame can change you. It can either can either make you or break you. I’ve gone through my ups and downs and different challenges, but there’s a foundation that I’ve had from my family and from trying to keep honest people around me that’s kept me on the right track. I’m not saying I’m perfect. I’ve made mistakes and gotten off track in certain ways, but I was able to keep a good head on my shoulders and I want to continue to do that. I’m older and wiser now. It’s not just about people noticing you, its about really changing people’s lives. That’s what I want to use my fame for.”

Brandy’s Daughter Wants A Blackberry For Christmas & Some

R&B singer Brandy’s eight-year-old daughter doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, and wants a blackberry.

“I got her list, and it is ridiculous. When she believed in Santa, she had a smaller list, but now that she knows I’m Santa Claus, she went crazy. Now, she wants a Blackbery and an iPhone 4. It’s like, ‘Little girl, you are 8, and you’re asking for a Blackberry?’” the singer and former Dancing With the Stars contestant told the PopEater website.

“It was so cute. She also asked for a hug and a kiss.

“Then clothes and shoes. She’ll get that and a few Barbies and American Girl dolls. But no way is she getting a Blackberry.

“My mom never cooks, but for Christmas and Thanksgiving she does. We always look forward to her cooking.

“For Christmas, there is a bunch of food and Christmas music. We’ll open gifts and just hang out at the house all day. It’s nothing spectacular, but it is filled with a lot of love.”

I’m glad that Brandy  isn’t getting her daughter a blackberry – but what do you think about young kids getting cell phones and the such, especially for the holidays?

Brandy Wants More Children

Single R&B star Brandy is planning to step up her search for love because she is desperate to have more children.

The singer welcomed daughter Sy’rai (8) in 2002 with her then-boyfriend, producer Robert Smith, but the couple split a year later (03). She’s then became engaged to basketball star Quentin Richardson, but is currently single.

Brandy, 31, is looking for a man she can settle down and have kids with, but fears time is running out.  She tells E! Online,

“I’m like, ‘Dude, hurry up before I end up not being able to have no more kids! (You’re) taking too long!’

“I’m looking for someone with the same values that I have. I’m looking for someone that has a pure heart. That has a love for God or the universe… Someone that loves children, easy on the eyes, and has a drive to be something very powerful in their experience.”

And Brandy admits she already has her family plans all mapped out, adding,

“I want three boys. I just think boys are cool. I have a precious little girl and I think she’s awesome. I just want to keep her my special little girl and then have the rest boys.”
