X-Why-Z Book (kids 4-6) From Time For Kids

Time for Kids X Why Z Cover

This book was so great and it was a real hit with the kids.  My kids are actually 8 and 6, but they love it and still read it every day. They say…”mom, why is…” and get such a thrill from giving the answer. It’s a great book, with excellent pictures/illustrations and very attractive, interesting questions and answers for kids. It really hits the sweet spot. I mean, seriously, how many times are you asked “Why?” in a day? It’s all day long, isn’t it?

From animals to plants, from the human body to history, the new book X-Why-Z helps children ages four to six better understand the world they live in. Presented by Time Home Entertainment Inc. and the editors of TIME For KidsX-Why-Z (Time Home Entertainment Inc.; $14.95) is on sale now and available at www.timeforkids.com/xwhyz  and at retailers nationwide.

Addressing more than 200 questions, , X-Why-Z delivers age-appropriate answers to questions ranging from “Why do I sneeze?” to “Why is grass green?” From the editors of the award-winning TIME For Kids classroom magazine, parents, teachers, and libraries can be sure that X-Why-Z is age appropriate, informative and entertaining. This would even be a great addition to your kids’ schools and classrooms…no, really.

X Why Z

Here are some of the really good questions and answers that, so far, have my kids coming back day after day:

Human Body

Q. Why do I get goosebumps?

A. Goosebumps help your skin keep warm. Your hair stands up to protect your skin from cold air. Each tiny hair makes one bump.

Animals

Q. Why do cats lick you?

A. Cats lick people to show they care. It’s like a mother cat cleaning her kitten.

Nature:

Q. Why do tree leaves change color?

A. During the spring and summer, leaves are filled with green chlorophyll. The chlorophyll helps the trees make food, and it makes the leaves look green. In the colder fall weather, leaves lose their chlorophyll and show their bright colors.

Earth & Space:

Q. Why does the moon seem to change shape?

A. One side of the moon always faces the sun, and one side is always dark. Here on Earth, we can only see the part of the moon that is lit by the sun. For a few days every month, we see the whole lit side, and we call it a full moon. The rest of the month, we only see part of the lit side, so the moon looks smaller. When we can’t see any of the lit part, we call that a new moon.

Inventions:

Q. Why are school buses yellow?

A. Yellow is an easy color to see, even in bad weather. The bright color warns drivers to look out for children.

Places

Q. Why do igloos keep people warm?

A. A house made of ice does not sound warm. But people who live in frozen places can make an igloo very comfortable. A fire can warm the small space, but it will not melt the ice walls. The igloo also blocks the freezing wind.

History

Q. Why did Egyptians make mummies?

A. Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. They wanted to preserve their bodies for the next life. A mummy is a dead body that has been dried and wrapped in strips of linen cloth so that it will not rot.

“It is with great pride that TIME For Kids presents X-Why-Z as the first title in our highly anticipated new series of books for children ages four to six,” said Bob Der, Editorial Director, TIME For Kids. “X-Why-Z is the perfect reference book for children and a great conversation starter for parents to have with their children. It’s a book that kids will come back to again and again.”

Did you know that Aristotle (384-322 BC) is often referred to as the father of marine biology? Aristotle is the first to record observations on marine life, and identified a variety of species including crustaceans, echinoderms, mollusks, and fish. However, until submarines were invented, it was almost impossible to explore the deep ocean. Today, submarines are used by marine biologists to collect samples, take videos and observe sea life in ways that humans would not be able to do! Marine biologists are able to work at depths of several hundred meters for hours in these special submarines!

Ride-Along-the-Dinosaur-Train-book

There is so much to discover under water. Just recently in December 2012, a giant, marine reptile that roamed the seas around 150 million years ago was identified as a new species. The animal, now named Pliosaurus funkei spanned about 40 feet, had a massive 6.5 foot long skull and a bite as powerful as a Tyrannosaurus rex.

We wonder what Buddy would think of that?!

Buddy and everyone’s favorite Pteranodon family recently dove into an underwater adventure in “Submarine Adventure.” The one-hour program will feature four new stories about sea creatures that lived during the “Age of Dinosaurs.” Preschoolers will meet new friends along the way – from Otto Ophthalmosaurus to Archelon turtles – as they learn about natural science, natural history and paleontology. And if you missed it, both full episodes and clips from “Submarine Adventure” are available on the PBS KIDS Video Player at PBSKIDS.org/video and on the free PBS KIDS Video App!

The Baby Sense Secret by Megan Faure

This is the book I wish I had when all 4 of my children were babies. The Baby Sense Secret really is a “user manual” for babies and it will take you straight through the first year. The books offers was to decode your baby’s moods and signals so that you all end up happier. If you’ve already had a baby, you know how helpful this would be to have throughout that first year. If you’re pregnant, buy it now. If you’re not, make it your go to baby shower gift or be ready to buy it when your own baby comes along. Already have a baby or two, there’s still plenty in here for you too. As a mother of 4 children very close in age, I can say that not only is each one different, but I’m usually too tired to remember the painfully learned lessons form the previous baby and so very often wish I had a reference manual that could help me figure out what to do or not do to make my babies happy.

The Baby Sense Secret gives you the information you need to have a happy, secure baby, or at least help you get there with much less fretting, crying and stress than you would without it. In the heat of the moment when your baby is just screaming, it’s so great to have this to fall back on, to remind you that sometimes when you think is your baby saying, I’m having fun, is really your baby saying, I’m way beyond overstimulated and about to start screaming unless you get me out of here. The book starts at the very beginning and takes you through how to decode what your baby is saying for that first year, long before your baby can actually say, I need to be picked up, I need to be held, I’m tired, I’m overwhelmed, I’m sick or I just need some quiet time. There is also information on how to adapt your life to the baby’s and what can seem like an overwhelming move into a life you just can’t understand until you’re in it- sleep & sleep issues, feeding, personality, co-sleeping, breastfeeding, transition to solids, developmental milestones, routines, calming, colic and so much more. The final 7 chapters present the same information adapted to a specific age range, so you now how to proceed once your baby switches things up on you as they grow, which babies always do.

The Baby Sense Secret will help give you the tools, confidence and support to understand what your baby needs at each stage of the first year. Understanding your baby’s needs and how to decode the ever changing moods will help you both have a calmer day and fewer sleepless nights, so that you can establish a routine that works for everyone, spending less time just fretting over why your sweet baby is screaming and wondering what you can do to make it end.

This amazing book is the latest addition to the Baby Sense Line which is now available in the United States through Kastel International. In addition to the Baby Sense books, the Baby Sense product collection includes the Baby Sense Burp Cloth, Baby Sense Cuddlewrap, Baby Sense Nurture Nest, Baby Sense Feeding Shawl, Baby Sense Receiving Blankets, Baby Sense Sling and Baby Sense Summer and Winter Sleepy Sacs. Baby Sense was founded in 2005 by Megan Faure (BSc, OT, OTR, Mother), an occupational therapist who has worked for more than a decade in the pediatrics field in several countries including the USA, UK, and South Africa.  Baby Sense and The Baby Sense Secret aims to give parents the tools to understand their baby’s sensory world by reading baby’s body language and signals and then being able to respond accordingly making happier babies and parents. Could there be anything better than that?
