Alicia Keys Explains Why She Named Her Son Egypt

A lot of her fans were left scratching their heads when chart topper Alicia Keys named her first son Egypt and now the singer is explaining why she chose the name. Here’s what she says:

I took an important trip for myself to Egypt. There were a lot of things that needed change. I was not as experienced then, so I felt close to a breakdown. I went to Egypt, and I went alone. I sailed down the Nile and I saw the temples, the tombs, and the pyramids. It was powerful. It was veryCleopatra. When we found out I was pregnant, my husband said, ‘Egypt was such an important time for you. That really changed your life. Wouldn’t that be amazing as a name?’ Once he said that, I was like, ‘Yes.’”

“He’s adorable. Soon Egypt will come on tour with me, and then he’ll get a taste of that world. Most importantly, I want him to do everything he does with passion, whatever that may be.”

Alicia – who’s debut album was released when she was only 20 – has also said how Egypt inspires her own music, saying: “He’s the best collaboration I’ve ever done, he’s the best song I ever wrote, the best experience I’ve ever had, the best show I’ve ever performed. He’s the best everything.”
