When Rise of the Guardians came out in theaters last year, our schedules were so crazy that we never had a chance to see it before it was gone, which is rare for our family.   Good thing we didn’t have to wait too too long before it hit DVD form!   It was released last week and it was worth the wait! 

Featuring the voices of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law,  Rise of the Guardians is a magical story about the legendary guardians: the Easter Bunny, “North” (aka Santa), the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost.  The guardians come together to defeat villain “Pitch” (aka the Boogey Man) who is threatening to squash the hope and belief of kids all over the world through via “nightmares”. 

Without giving any spoilers away, my favorite part of the movie is the sweet explanation of “why” the Tooth Fairy takes our baby teeth as we lose them and what they do with them!  I also loved the new depiction of Santa, called “North” in the movie – complete with tattoos of “naughty and nice” on each arm.  Not your typical Santa Clause, but fun nonetheless! 

I need to add, if you have younger kids who are sensitive to scary images and story themes, it may be overwhelming at times with Pitch and his “nightmares”.  You may want to take a peek at it by yourself first, to see if it’s something they’ll be able to handle.   But it’s truly a great movie with fully fleshed out characters and some back story as to how they came to be in the positions of “guardians”. 

Rise of the Guardians is available now on DVD & Blu-Ray.  It would make a perfect addition to Easter baskets!

Nightlights are often needed as our kids grow, for comfort, for safety if they need to get up in the middle of the night and more.  Most nightlights are the plug-in kind and can stay on all night long and while the handheld flashlights can be great, they’re often bulky and often times require big batteries and have lights so bright they’ll wake your neighbor three windows over.   This week we had the chance to try out the brand new and super cute Light My Way Portable Nightlight from Munchkin – shaped like an owl!

The design is so simple and yet so genius.  The minute we turned it on (just 3 AAA batteries), I was in love with how soothing the light was.  It’s a clean, soft white light that won’t light up the whole house, but it is just the right amount of light to give your kids comfort as they fall asleep or to light their way to the bathroom (or your bedroom…).  The handle is perfect for toddler sized hands on up through adult.  The best part? There’s an automatic shutoff after 20 minutes.  No wasted power/battery usage from staying on all night!  And don’t worry about the white plastic getting dirty easily – it washes clean in a snap with a damp cloth and a touch of mild soap, if necessary!

The Light My Way Portable Nightlight retails for around $13.99 from Amazon as well as a number of large retailers like Toys R Us, Target and others.

The second new product being released by Munchkin this month is the Lulla-Vibe Vibrating Mattress Pad.  We’ve seen everything from vibrating animals to stuffed bears that mimic a womb sound with heartbeats, etc, but this takes comforting your infant to another level (without having to head out of the house for a car ride).  The Lulla-Vibe is placed underneath the crib mattress and gently vibrates to help your baby fall asleep.

The vibration steps down as the timer runs down over the course of the 30 minutes.  There are also two speeds of vibrations depending on what your baby needs.  The power button requires being held down for a minute with some pressure, therefore it wouldn’t be easily turned on accidentally by small children. It meets all federal safety standards and operates on 4 AA batteries.

For the adventurous mother who is looking for a good, in-between option when it comes to the ultimate family car, we’ve got good news for you. If you’re looking to escape the model mini-van stereotype but are still looking for a vehicle that will give allow you to transport your canoe, bikes, and ski-slopes while still managing to take the neighborhood kids to school on your car pool days, then the all-new 2014 Subaru Forester is for you (and for us, too!).

I recently had the chance to test drive the vehicle during my stay at the Miraval Resort and Spa in Tucson, Arizona, and let me tell you, not only was I impressed with the interior room (which easily can fit both you, your partner, your two kids and your mother-in-law when necessary), but it was also stylish, sleek and most importantly, safe. While test driving through the Tucson Mountains and its surrounding valleys, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the car’s ability to maneuver through some of the most difficult terrains. And if a car can do that and avoid hiccups at the same time, then it can definitely manage I-95 traffic at its worst when you need to pick up your kids from school and take them to their tennis and soccer practices.

As with all previous Forester models, the 2014 version comes standard with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a distinction from competitive models that come with front-wheel drive as standard and offer all-wheel drive as an extra-cost option. The 2014 Forester will lead the segment in all-wheel drive fuel economy, with the 2.5i model achieving manufacturer’s fuel economy estimates of 24 mpg city / 32 mpg highway / 27 mpg combined. Those figures also compare well with competitors that feature front-wheel drive.

And while Subaru tends to market their models to the more active demographic out there, it has kept the busy parent in mind, too. With the new Forester, our children can reach their sippy cups with ease as they’ve designed their cup holders to be at arm’s reach for a toddler and the newly designed back trunk gives us more space to put our double strollers inside with ease along with our yoga mats and our kids’ hockey gear if needed.

Efficient, reliable, durable AND sexy… I mean, is there anything else a modern mom would need in a new car? And the fact that it kills the entire soccer mom mini-van stereo-type is what we love the most, too. My kids love juice boxes. I assume this is pretty much a staple in most people’s homes. We have recently migrated to the “pouches” for various reasons…the most being that they actually have less sugar and calories than a lot of the actual “boxes” do. Plus, the kids always love the taste.  Honest Kids is an amazing product that we have loved for years. We love Honest Tea and know it’s great, so when we had kids and saw Honest Kids, it was a no-brainer. And we have not been disappointed. I love that they are becoming easier and easier to find, as well! The flavors and names are great as well…Appley Ever After, Berry Berry Good Lemonade, Goodness Grapeness, Super Fruit Punch, and Tropical Tango Punch!!

Now, there’s a fresh and clean new look: it’s brighter, seems less cluttered and has bigger, more vibrant fruit imagery. I love the look and so do the kids. It really bangs home that fact that this drink is good for you.  And the new recipe, to go along with the new packaging, is better for you too!  Honest Kids took out the cane sugar and added more juice content. The drinks are now sweetened only with fruit juice. You get 100% of your Vitamin C for the day, at only 40 calories per each 6.75oz drink! To top it off, the drink is not only  USDA Certified Organic but the kid-friendly messaging on the carton lists all the wonderful benefits of sustainable farming and organics. There’s even info on their TerraCycle partnership.

Shoney’s, the great American eatery, is celebrating 65 years of dining by giving their guests one of America’s favorite sweet treats: a Barq’s® root beer float with a gift of a limited edition collectible Coca-Cola® bell soda glass..
