I’m always on the lookout for fun family games that are educational as well. Have you heard of the popular game “You’ve Been Sentenced”? Have you played with your friends or family yet? It’s a fun, brain-teasing, silly sentence-creating game that has been winning awards and gaining in popularity over the past few years.
The real fun begins when players have to read their sentences out loud and explain what they mean to the rest of players. They form the jury and vote thumbs up or down on whether the sentence and justification stand and the points are scored. 540 cards with over 2,500 words insure billions of possible sentences so the game is never repetitive and has unlimited re-play value.
The company has now come out with a new NASA based add-on deck for the game for all those space and aviation fans in your household:
After McNeill Designs signed a Space Act Agreement with The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the firm produced the new deck in conjunction with NASA’s Education Department. Together, the two chose words that reflected the rich history and future of NASA and space exploration. As an added learning tool, word definitions, individuals’ bios, and term definitions can now be found on the NASA websites, so that children and parents can learn about space exploration and NASA together.
If you haven’t heard of the game, there’s a great video that explains it well. It’s intended for ages 8 and up, with 3-10 players needed. On the game’s website, you will find a ton of variations on the methods of play and even features a lesson plan for teachers who wish to use this as a teaching tool. It’s geared for family & school fun, but it’s a blast to play with a group of adults-only, as well!
Just a few of the awards the YBS game has been awarded:
* Creative Child Magazine, Seal of Excellence
* Dr. Toy Best Products
* Spewgie Award, Best Family Fun Game
* iParenting Media Hot Product Award
* FAO Schwarz Toy Auditions, Winner

* George Lucas Educational Foundation’s Edutopia magazine, Hot Media for Educators
* MENSA Society’s Parenting for High Potential magazine, Resource Roundup Pick
